Y release debut single and sign to Hideous Mink Records & SO Recordings
The Fat White Family side project have casually introduced their eclectic, 'wonk rock' sound.
London newcomers Y have announced their signing to Hideous Mink Records (Alien Chicks, Opus Kink) & SO Recordings (Enter Shikari, Deadletter, Big Special), as well as details of their debut EP Y, which is set for release April 4th.
Alongside the announcement, the newly signed five-piece have also shared their first single Why - a hectic, sax-riddled, and practically lyric-less call for answers.
“‘Why’ is a song that calls everything into question - It’s an ode to the unanswered, endless questions from the trivial, to the deepest philosophical mysteries.”
Emerging from the creative brains of band founders Adam Brennan (Fat White Family) and Sophie Coppin, Y are a genre-defying band who have blended their shared music tastes and contrasting stylistic approaches into an eclectic and unpredictable sound - playfully described as “wonk rock,” “Gameboy thrash,” and “Egyptian wedding music.”
Consisting of members from or involved with Fat White Family, Meatraffle and Pregoblin, Y features Adam Brennan on vocals and guitar, Sophie Coppin on vocals and synth, Dan GB on bass, Fells on drums, and Harry Mchale on sax.
Speaking on the single, Y said: “‘Why’ is a song that calls everything into question - It’s an ode to the unanswered, endless questions from the trivial, to the deepest philosophical mysteries. Saxophone dominates the chorus as synth and guitar take the space of the traditional lyrical verses as ultimately we found THE question can only be answered through music.”
Set to celebrate the release of their debut single at their home stage of The Windmill, Brixton later this week (January 24th), Y will also tour with Fat Dog and Keg next month (full details below), bringing their exhilarating live presence to cities across the UK.
Why is out now via SO Recordings and Hideous Mink Records and is available on all digital platforms.
